Single-Stage vs. Two-Stage Cordless Vacuum Pump HVAC

When choosing the correct pump, there are various aspects to consider. Where do you even begin when there are so many distinct types? Is it better to obtain a single-stage or a two-stage Cordless Vacuum Pump HVAC? How many CFM do you have? Avoid becoming paralyzed by analytical paralysis! Let's talk about most of what you should know about cordless vacuum pumps.


There are various vacuum pumps available, but which one is best for vacuum forming and, more specifically, our tabletop vacuum press? Each produces a distinct level of vacuum and works differently. Here's a quick rundown of the most prevalent varieties and why we recommend them or don't.

  • Diaphragm pumps are extremely quiet and long-lasting, and they do not utilize oil or emit any oil mist. This pump can only achieve a medium vacuum (about 83.5 per cent) and has a low CFM. For our thermoforming vacuum press, we don't recommend these.
  • Vacuum generators require an air compressor and a venturi pump to create a vacuum. They're loud, and the suction they produce isn't always consistent. With this sort of pump, all of the wear and tear transfers to your air compressor and other pricey equipment. It's not something we endorse for our presses.
  • Oil-filled Rotary Vane Pumps make the best vacuum for the money. They're long-lasting, low-cost, simple to work with, don't require special tools, and easily adapt to vacuum pressing. It has a design to run indefinitely for long periods. For every budget, there are numerous possibilities. We believe that Oil Filled Rotary Vane Pumps are the finest option, so we've built our vacuum formers to work with them exclusively. What do you mean? Aside from the price, what is the difference? Two rotors and vanes are used in a two-stage design. The first stage creates a vacuum, while the second cleans the system, resulting in a higher ultimate vacuum level. As a result, two-stage pumps may achieve higher vacuum levels than single-stage pumps. Pumps with two stages might cost up to twice as much as single-stage pumps.

Consider what you want to accomplish before making your decision. A two-stage pump is the best option if you want a faster evacuation, cleaner procedure, and quieter operation. At sea level, both single and double stage pumps can reach 29.92 inches of mercury (inHg possible based on altitude, see conversion chart here).


  • OPERATION: Single-stage pumps exhaust into a chamber integrated inside the pump, separating the oil from the pushed gas. The oil has been returned, and the gas has been used up.
  • APPLICATION: Single-stage pumps are less expensive than similar two-stage pumps and perform well at rough vacuum levels.


  • OPERATION: Dual-stage pumps combine a low vacuum stage with a mated high vacuum stage in a single unit. The high vacuum stage collects process gas and sends it to a second, lower vacuum stage, which compresses the gas to atmospheric pressure, enhancing the pump's vacuum performance.
  • APPLICATION: For procedures that demand a deeper vacuum, dual-stage pumps offer a higher pressure range, usually by a decade or two (10-1 Torr vs. 10-3 Torr).

In other words, if the vacuum level isn't an issue, a single-stage vane pump might suffice. The two-stage rotary vane pump, on the other hand, would be the finest choice if you need higher pressure and vacuum performance.
